Podcast: Dean and Geoffrey Moore on chasms, tornadoes, life, ethics, and mortality
Hi Folks,
For about a decade, I’ve been applying Geoffrey Moore’s breakthrough books Inside the Tornado and Crossing the Chasm as reference manuals for the business model design and strategy of Scaled Agile. These books had an enormous impact on my multi-startup career; each with unparalleled insights on technology product strategy. What sticks with me most to this day, is that the things that made you successful at one point in time—wherever you are in the adoption lifecycle—won’t necessarily make you successful in the future. Basically, while your mission and vision can be constant, the strategy has to change at various points in the technology maturity adoption cycle. And the tornado is truly a whirlwind for those lucky enough to experience it.
We’ve applied these insights to our growth at Scaled Agile and I have to say, so far, so good!
So you can imagine my delight when Geoffrey agreed to speak at the SAFe 2020 Global Summit, and followed that up by joining me for an episode of our SAFe® Business Agility Podcast.
We cover a lot of ground in this 19-minute discussion, from the relevance of the Agile Manifesto, what it means to keep your company relevant as you cross the chasm, and how a second edition of “Inside the Tornado” might look today compared to the original.
Perhaps most compelling is what Geoffrey has to say about his next book, which he describes as “ … the book that I needed to write.” It’s titled “The Infinite Staircase – What the Universe Tells Us About Life, Ethics, and Mortality.” We’ll have to wait for that one.
I invite you to listen in when you get a chance.
Stay SAFe,
—Dean
